British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
