Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
