The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Boost Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Response

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct game identity.

Ismailer stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement echoes a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full text from the president's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our fans.

The belief in this project strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and background in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having dedicated the recent years creating and leading some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in welcoming him next week. We are all eager to persist observing the development of the game in the weeks to follow.

David

Background of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He previously worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a early access event. At the time, the developers described the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description explains. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, risks, and tests that change every round. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."

Project Ethos has not yet received an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can look forward to further news as production continues.
