In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
